Our neighbour, Marcus, passed away on Friday morning. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February this year and we found out about a month ago or so. We didn't really know Marcus very well. He was a tailor and he was married to his wife, Sheila, for almost 60 years (I understand this this year is the 60th anniversary). He was about 91 when he died and he was always friendly when we saw him. His death really affected me though, mainly because it reminded me so much of my Dad's ordeal with pancreatic cancer and losing him just over 4 years ago.
This whole week has felt like one long weekend. The problem is that I have a long list of work to be done and the only thing I seem to have much energy for is updating my blogs. Ugh! I really need to get all that work done. Any tips or should I just give up for the week and try again next week?
The last two weeks have been a bit nutty. I moved into an office and had to contend with an immediate connectivity problem because my laptop's network card doesn't work. I battled to find a wireless network adaptor and finally gave up after trekking to Clearwater and sent my laptop in for repair.
I took it in on Monday and was told I could collect it on Wednesday morning. I spoke to the guy on Tuesday and he told me that the part had been replaced and that they would run a couple tests overnight to make sure it worked and sure enough on Wednesday morning he told me that the part had been faulty and a new one ordered. So now the part will apparently be replaced tomorrow and I may be able to pick it up on Friday. What a mission. In the meantime I have been using pcs here at the office and at home and a 2GB USB storage device to carry all my files with me. Not ideal but it works for the most part.
On the positive side I am starting to settle down a bit more and I feel like I am starting to work better. One of my intentions in taking up this office was to see how productive I can be working in this environment (I tend to get a little sidetracked at home even though I much prefer working at home) and if my productivity improves quite a bit then it opens opportunities to me to bring in someone to help me handle more work.
Anyway, I have had quite a bit of work and have had to slow down a little and focus on what needs to be done and what the various priorities are. One thing that struck me is that my thinking about how I would have all this quality time to do things and still get all my work done wasn't entirely correct. Between my lecturing, daily tasks and work, I rarely get to do much more than the odd lunch or coffee, let alone a morning movie!! This had led me to reconsider this whole idea of being self-employed (or perhaps to re-evaluate it). While it is better than being employed, I would like to make the move to being more of a business owner where I can rather work hard at developing new businesses, bringing in people to run them and being far more productive than I am now.
This last week has been absolutely crazy. I moved into an office within an associate firm in Killarney. I started moving my files and other stuff across on Tuesday and only really started working properly yesterday. The rest of the time was spent running from one place to another getting my basic infrastructure sorted out so I could actually do something. This included a completely wasted trip out to the Clearwater Mall to buy (or attempt to buy) a wireless network device so I could connect my PowerBook to the local network.
I have moved all of my files to the new office and have arrived at a temporary solution for Internet access through one of their PCs (my PowerBook is having its network card repaired on Monday so I'll be able to plug in when I get it back). So now it is a process of getting up to date on everything. I feel like I am so far behind on so many files it is frightening.
Anyway, I must go get something to eat and then head off to my lecture for this morning and then back to the office.
