Gina, Aaron, Jared and I had a picnic at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens today. Sam and Lawrence were supposed to join us but they ditched us in favour of some stuff they had to do so we went ahead, just the 4 of us and had a pretty good time there. The park/gardens is in Emmarentia (I usually refer to them it as the Emmarentia Dam) a nd I usually go to the dam side. Jared took us up to the botanical gardens themselves and I was impressed with them. They are beautiful and there are a number of spots under trees (and in the open) where people can settle down for a nice picnic or just a general social thing with friends and family. We will definitely be going back there for another picnic.
Anyway, we picked a spot under a big tree on the corner of one of the levels (the section of the gardens we were at is made up of a series of gardens on different levels and you climb a couple steps to get to the next one. Each one has a few rose gardens and a water feature of some kind.
No picnic would be a real picnic without some tasty treats from Woolworths so Gina popped out before we headed out to the gardens and bought us some chicken salad sandwiches, koeksisters, chips and some very tasty litchis. Jared brought with him a slab of Lindt dark chocolate with chili (a very interesting combination).
Gina and Jared took out some decks of cards after we had fed and changed Aaron so I put him into the Moby wrap Gina bought a couple weeks ago and went for a walk around with my camera. He fell asleep almost straight away and seemed to be perfectly comfortable in the wrap. It settles him and it has the huge benefit of enabling us to keep our hands free to do what we need to do. I have started using the wrap at home when he doesn't settle so I can work or do what I need to do. I am actually wearing it now, he gets a bit niggly when he is home (not sure why he does that mainly when he is home and not when he is out or at my mother in law). Anyway, I just took a whole lot of photos of the gardens and a couple photos of some weddings that were going on. There must have been 4 separate weddings happening at the same time on the grounds. Jared says this is pretty common there.
The only negative part of the day was some couple who set up a few meters away from us and then made out/dry humped each other very vocally. My theory is that he was both performing to the crowd that was gathering nearby and resorted to the park because his mom doesn't like him bringing girls home. Another theory is that the girl he was with charges by the hour and taking her home would only add to the overall cost of the afternoon's entertainment.
Anyway we started ignoring them and got on with our afternoon.
We just got back home from Sandton City where we saw Stardust (great movie, lots of fun). We went to the food court for lunch afterwards. Gina went to the Steers for a burger and I went to KFC. I was waiting in line when she appeared, pretty upset.
It turned out that she was waiting in line behind two people who were paying. Once they were done she moved to the counter where the manager was standing. He saw her standing there, all of 8 months pregnant. Instead of acknowledging her presence, he instructed the cashiers to serve two other people. He ignored an obviously pregnant woman and let people push in front of her without saying a word.
What a pig.
We went to visit Gina's grandparents on her dad's side. Her grandmother was in hospital after an accident of some description (we have heard that she hurt her back, had a hip replacement and one or two other reports on her condition but with no independent confirmation of any of them).
Anyway, I shot two photos of Gina and Matt (who is back here from Israel before he moves there permanently in a couple weeks) which came out pretty well, I think:
After weeks of heat we have rain. It has been raining for the last half hour or so and the day has turned into a perfect "stay at home" day (Gina prefers BMW to describe the day). I have a bit of work today so that is what I am up to this afternoon. I have a Fleetwood Mac list on iTunes which I am playing. It seems like perfect music for this weather.
On another note, Gina has been blogging up a storm on her blog. She has really taken to it and I look forward to reading what she publishes. I'd love to take credit and say that all my blogging has rubbed off on her but that isn't really true. Her real inspiration is Tertia Albertyn whose blog, So Close, is a tremendously successful blog here and which Tertia uses to share her experiences with her infertility, her gorgeous twins and her life in general.
Anyway, I must get back to work. Still got some money to earn so I can bill it at the end of next week.
Gina is blogging! Go girl!
